Find Joy Walking A Labyrinth

My first experience walking a labyrinth was when my daughter was in elementary school. One of her most loved activities was attending classes at a local theater conservatory. While my daughter was in class, I had an hour and a half with little to do and no place to go. That is until I discovered the labyrinth!

Walking a labyrinth is an ancient mindfulness practice many have used for meditation, prayer, or contemplation.

The labyrinths I’ve enjoyed were located in natural settings. The beauty of their surroundings enhanced my experience. The one at the theater conservatory is laid out in a dramatic redwood grove. I visited frequently. Over time, I developed a connection with the labyrinth and the grove.

I walked the labyrinth during the day and under the moonlight. I walked when I was troubled and on days filled with joy. Sometimes, I would begin my walking meditation with a specific question or worry that I was contemplating. Other times, I would notice the natural splendor around me and listen attentively to the owls hooting overhead. I might choose to sing quietly to myself or skip or dance. Whatever moved me in the moment, grounded me, and guided my spiritual practice.

I discovered many spiritual benefits by engaging with the labyrinth

  • A deep connection to the natural world

  • Relaxation and calm at the end of a challenging day

  • Creative inspiration to bring a project to life

  • A revelation about how to move forward with my intentions

  • Peace with a difficult decision
