Imagine Your Future
Midlife is an opportune time to imagine your future in a new light. A vision board is a tool to bring your dreams into focus.
I first heard about a vision board from my colleague and friend, Gloria. I was at a crossroads in my career and was working to launch an entrepreneurial program. "You need to create a vision board,” Gloria said. “Get a piece of cardboard. Place a photo of yourself in the center. Next, create a collage around your picture that represents your vision.” I was intrigued. I followed her instructions and brought my vision to life on the board and later to fruition in my career.
Creating a vision board is a tool for reflection and a visual representation of your aspirations. Make one with examples that motivate and are important to you. Get creative. Gather and include pictures, images, inspiring words, quotes, or affirmations. Don’t overthink it but be intentional.
Place your vision board where you will see it often and be inspired. Think of it as a work in progress and add to it as your vision evolves and gets clearer.
Vision boards encourage positive emotions and hope for the future. They remind us what we care deeply about. They help us make connections between what we value and what we are working toward. They open us to see new possibilities. It’s also fun to make them!
Alternatives to creating a vision board include writing a letter to your future self, crafting a written statement or poem, recording your vision on your phone, designing one digitally, or another creative way that works for you. The goal is to create a gentle reminder that motivates and inspires you.
